🚨 2023 Honda Step WGN: Emergency Neutral
The 2023 Honda Step WGN (seventh generation, new platform introduced late 2022) hybrid uses a console-mounted electronic shifter with shift-by-wire technology similar to current Honda hybrid systems.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition to ON (II) position if 12V power is available - press the START button twice without pressing the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override - look for a small removable cap or cover near the base of the shifter assembly, typically on the left side or forward edge of the shifter housing
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or the mechanical key to carefully pry off the shift lock override cover
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override depressed, press the shifter release button (if present) and move the shifter toward the N (Neutral) position
- The shifter should now move freely to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be carefully rolled or winched onto a flatbed
Shift-lock override location
Small removable cap near the shifter base on the center console; likely on the left or forward side of the shifter housing, though the all-new 2023 generation may have a different configuration than previous models
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the hybrid system and electronic shifter are non-functional. Use the mechanical shift lock override to release the shifter mechanism. If the override does not work with zero power, or if the electronic components remain locked, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with wheels lifted or on dollies. Do not force the shifter as this may damage the electronic mechanism.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL WARNING: The Step WGN hybrid must be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground. DO NOT tow with any wheels touching the ground - the hybrid transaxle contains electric motors that are mechanically connected to the drive wheels, and rotation will generate dangerous voltage that can damage the hybrid system and pose electrical hazards. If you must move the vehicle a short distance for loading positioning, keep it minimal (under 50 feet at walking speed only).
