🚨 2017 Honda WR-V: Emergency Neutral

The 2017 WR-V uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission shift lever with mechanical shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to ON/ACC position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: on the console near the shifter, typically on the left side or front side of the shifter base, covered by a small cap
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the tip of the mechanical key to carefully pry off the small rubber or plastic cap covering the override slot
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shift lever from Park to Neutral
  7. Release the override once the shifter is securely in Neutral position
Shift-lock override location
Console area near the shifter base, typically on the left or front side under a small cap; exact location may require inspection of the specific vehicle
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery and no electrical power, the shift lock override provides mechanical release of the shift interlock. The override does not require battery power to function. If the override slot is not immediately visible, check around the entire perimeter of the shifter base and console trim.
