⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition to the ON (II) position if battery power is available.
- Locate the shift lock override slot: look for a small rectangular cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the P position.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal end of the key to pry off the small override cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shifter out of Park.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved; maintain pressure on the override if the shifter tries to return to Park.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, you cannot turn the ignition to ON. The shift lock override should still function mechanically—press the override and apply force to move the shifter. If the shifter remains locked, you may need to provide 12V power temporarily (jump pack to battery terminals) to energize the shift lock solenoid enough to release it.
