🚨 2011 Hyundai Equus: Emergency Neutral

The 2011 Hyundai Equus uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with electronic shift lock connected to the brake-light switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock override access: on the column shifter assembly, look for a small slot or opening near the base of the shifter lever on the steering column
  4. You may need to remove a small plastic cover or trim piece near the shifter base to access the override mechanism
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot
  6. While pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and holding the tool in the override position, pull the shifter toward you and move it down to the Neutral position
  7. The override releases the mechanical lock that prevents shifting out of Park
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the column shifter lever on the steering column; may be covered by a small trim piece that needs to be pried off
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, turn the key to ACC position mechanically (this does not require battery power for the mechanical lock cylinder). The shift lock override should work mechanically even without electrical power. If the column remains locked, the steering lock may also be engaged; ensure the key can turn to at least ACC position before attempting to shift.
