🚨 2026 Hyundai Kona N: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 Kona N is expected to continue with the second-generation electronic push-button shift-by-wire system mounted on the center console.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake if possible.
  2. Attempt to turn the ignition to ON or ACC position—the push-button shifter requires electrical power to function.
  3. If power is available and the brake light switch is the issue, press the brake pedal firmly and press the 'N' button to shift to Neutral.
  4. If there is no electrical power at all, the push-button shifter will NOT function—the vehicle must be placed on a flatbed tow truck or trailer.
  5. DO NOT attempt to tow this vehicle with wheels on the ground; the transmission may be locked in Park electronically with no mechanical override accessible from the cabin.
  6. For flatbed loading: ensure the steering wheel is unlocked (may require jump-starting the 12V battery briefly), then use wheel dollies or a flatbed.
  7. In genuine emergencies where the vehicle must be moved a few feet (onto a flatbed), consult the owner's manual for any emergency towing procedure—some models have a hidden mechanical Park release accessible only from underneath the vehicle by a technician.
Shift-lock override location
None accessible from the cabin. The shift-by-wire system has no traditional mechanical shift lock override slot.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the 2026 Kona N cannot be shifted out of Park using cabin controls. The electronic shifter is entirely dependent on the 12V electrical system. You must either jump-start the battery to restore power, or load the vehicle onto a flatbed with the wheels locked. There is no shift lock override button or slot in the cabin for this generation.
