🚨 1990 Isuzu Rodeo: Emergency Neutral

The 1990 Isuzu Rodeo (first model year) uses a column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift lock system tied to the brake-light switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Engage the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if you have any battery power remaining.
  3. Locate the shift lock override access point on the column shifter assembly, typically a small slot or opening near where the shifter lever enters the column housing.
  4. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot.
  5. While pressing the override mechanism with the tool, press the shifter button and move the lever to Neutral.
  6. If the battery is completely dead and the steering wheel is locked, apply slight rotational pressure to the wheel while turning the key to ACC to release the steering lock.
Shift-lock override location
Small access slot located near the base of the column shifter lever where it meets the steering column, generally on the side of the shifter housing.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, turn the key to ACC position (may require wiggling the steering wheel to unlock the steering column). The shift lock override is mechanical and does not require electrical power—use the override slot with a screwdriver to bypass the brake interlock mechanism.
