🚨 2017 Kia Niro EV: Emergency Neutral
The first-generation Niro EV (2019+ model years; no 2017 Niro EV was produced) uses an electronic push-button gear selector array on the center console with separate P, R, N, D buttons.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Press the start button twice without pressing the brake pedal to reach ON mode (READY indicator will not light)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the N (Neutral) button on the gear selector panel
- Verify Neutral is engaged by checking the instrument cluster display
- If the 12V battery is completely dead, the electronic gear selector will not function at all
- With no power, you cannot shift the vehicle electronically—use a jump starter to provide temporary 12V power, then immediately shift to Neutral using the N button
- If jump-starting is not possible, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with all wheels off the ground or using wheel dollies
With zero electrical power
The Niro EV uses an electronic push-button shifter with no mechanical override or release mechanism. With a completely dead 12V battery, the transmission cannot be shifted. You must jump-start the 12V battery (NOT the high-voltage system) to provide power to the gear selector, then immediately shift to Neutral. If jump-starting is impossible, flatbed-only transport is required with all wheels off the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Niro EV is a pure electric vehicle. NEVER tow with drive wheels on the ground for any distance—the electric motor will generate voltage and can severely damage the high-voltage system or cause a fire. Always use a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground. Do not attempt to tow more than a few feet for positioning even in Neutral. If moving onto a flatbed under its own rolling power, ensure the high-voltage system is completely OFF (not READY).
