🚨 2026 Kia Niro EV: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 Kia Niro EV uses an electronic shift-by-wire system with push-button or rotary selector on the center console (final configuration not yet confirmed for this model year).

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chocked—this is critical for EVs with electronic parking brakes.
- Attempt to press the brake pedal and select 'N' (Neutral) using the shifter buttons or rotary dial. If the 12V battery is weak but not completely dead, this may work.
- If the vehicle has any 12V power, try turning the ignition to ON (press START button without brake pedal) and then selecting 'N' while holding the brake.
- If completely dead with no power: The shift-by-wire system requires 12V power to function and likely does NOT have an accessible mechanical override.
- With zero 12V power, you must jump-start or replace the 12V battery (located under the hood) to restore power before you can shift to neutral.
- After restoring 12V power, press START without brake pedal, hold brake, and select 'N'.
- If the shift interlock is the problem (not battery): Check for a small shift lock override slot near the shifter assembly—location and existence not confirmed for this future model year.
- If override exists, insert a key or small screwdriver into the slot while holding the brake and selecting 'N'.
Shift-lock override location
Shift lock override location not confirmed for 2026 model—not yet released; assume similar to 2024-2025 generation but verify with owner's manual when available
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter will not function. You MUST jump-start the 12V battery (under hood) or replace it to gain any shifter function. Cannot be shifted to neutral mechanically without 12V power.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: Kia Niro EV MUST be flatbed towed—do NOT tow with drive wheels on the ground. Even in neutral, towing with wheels down will destroy the electric drive system. Always use a flatbed or wheel-lift with rear wheels raised. Electronic parking brake requires 12V power to release.
