🚨 2025 Kia Soul EV: Emergency Neutral
The 2025 Soul EV uses an electronic push-button shifter array on the center console with P, R, N, D buttons.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake fully
- Locate the shift lock release slot on the center console – it is a small covered slot near the shifter button array, typically forward and to the left of the P button
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the key blade to remove the small plastic cover over the shift lock release slot
- Insert the screwdriver or key blade into the shift lock release slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the N (Neutral) button
- The transmission should release into Neutral; the indicator will show N on the instrument cluster
- If you have 12V power, turn the ignition to ON (press START without brake pedal) before attempting to shift to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or winched onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock release is mechanical and should still function. However, you will not see confirmation on the instrument cluster. After using the override, verify Neutral by attempting to push the vehicle. If the electronic shifter remains completely unresponsive, the vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Soul EV must be flatbedded with all wheels OFF the ground. Never tow with any wheels touching the pavement – the electric motor remains mechanically connected to the drive wheels even in Neutral, and towing will cause severe damage to the drive system and generate dangerous voltage. Do not use dollies on the drive wheels.
