⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (this provides power to the shift lock solenoid)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the shift lock release button on the shifter handle and move the lever to Neutral
- If no power is available, locate the shift lock override access - look for a small cap or cover near the base of the shifter console on the right side
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver or a key into the override slot and press down while moving the shifter to Neutral
- The vehicle can now be moved or towed
Shift-lock override location
Small cap near the base of the shifter console, typically on the right side of the shifter - exact location may vary by trim level
With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, you must use the mechanical shift lock override. The ignition key does not need to be in any position. Simply access the override slot, press down with a tool, and shift to Neutral. If the override access is difficult to locate, consult the owner's manual or inspect around the entire shifter base perimeter for a removable cap.
