⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available.
- Locate the shift lock override slot—typically a small covered opening near the base of the column shifter assembly.
- Remove the cover cap (may require a small flat-blade screwdriver).
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the lever to Neutral.
- If no battery power is available, see noPowerNotes below.
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the column shifter assembly, typically on the lower right side; look for a small rectangular cap that can be pried off
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override should still function mechanically—use the override slot procedure above. The steering wheel will remain locked, so the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with wheels free or dragged with wheels straight. Do not attempt to tow with wheels on the ground if steering is locked.
