⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (if battery has any charge) or ACC position
- Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small rectangular or circular cover near the shifter base on the console
- Remove the cover cap carefully using a flathead screwdriver or by prying with your fingernail
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot beneath the cover
- Press the brake pedal (if functional) and/or push down on the override mechanism
- While holding the override depressed, press the shifter release button and move to Neutral
- If resistance is encountered, ensure the override is fully depressed and try rotating the key in the ignition while shifting
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the shifter console, typically a small covered slot adjacent to the shifter gate on the right or left side
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical shift lock override should still function. Insert tool into override slot and apply firm downward pressure while attempting to move shifter. The AMT (automated manual) variant may require slightly different technique than CVT. If steering lock is engaged with dead battery, slight steering wheel movement may be needed.
