The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot—typically a small covered opening near the base of the shifter console
- Remove the protective cap or cover from the override slot using a flathead screwdriver or by prying gently
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if possible) and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If the shifter will not move to Neutral, attempt to move it to any intermediate position, then to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded
