🚨 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport: Emergency Neutral

The 2021 Range Rover Sport (L494 generation) uses a rotary dial shifter that rises from the center console when the ignition is activated.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Locate the shift lock override - look for a small removable cover approximately 1 inch in diameter on the center console surface near the base of the rotary shifter dial
  2. The cover is typically located just behind or to the side of the shifter dial on the console surface
  3. Use a flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the override cover
  4. With the ignition in ACC or ON position (if available), insert a small screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the override hole and press down firmly
  5. While holding the override down, rotate the shifter dial counterclockwise to N (Neutral)
  6. If the battery is completely dead and the dial will not rise from the console, you must provide external power before the shifter can be operated

With zero electrical power
The rotary dial shifter is fully electronic and requires 12V power to function - the dial will not rise without power. With zero battery power, you must connect a jump box, jumper cables, or battery charger to provide at least ACC-level power before the shift lock override will work. If external power cannot be provided, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with all wheels off the ground using a winch.
