⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
- If you have electrical power (even with a weak battery), turn the ignition to ON (do not need to start the engine), press and hold the brake pedal, then shift normally to Neutral.
- If the shifter is locked and will not move from Park even with the brake depressed and ignition on, locate the shift lock override slot.
- The shift lock override is a small rectangular slot with a plastic cover, located on the center console immediately forward (toward the front of the car) of the shifter base.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the plastic cover.
- Insert the screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, move the shift lever out of Park into Neutral. You do NOT need to press the brake pedal while using the override.
- Once in Neutral, release the override and replace the cover. The vehicle can now be moved or towed.

With zero electrical power
The GS 430 shift lock override is mechanical. With zero electrical power, you can still use the override slot (forward of the shifter base) to release the shifter from Park into Neutral without any battery power. No ignition or brake input is required when using the override.
