🚨 2020 Lincoln MKX: Emergency Neutral

The 2020 Lincoln MKX (rebadged as Nautilus in 2019) uses a traditional console-mounted gear lever with electronic shift-lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to ON/RUN position if battery has any charge; if completely dead, proceed to override
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: on the console to the left side of the shifter base, there is a small rectangular cover/cap
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or key to carefully pry off the override cover
  5. Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to NEUTRAL
  7. If brake pedal has no effect due to dead battery, continue holding override and move shifter directly to NEUTRAL
  8. Once in NEUTRAL, replace the override cover

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override will mechanically release the shifter. You do not need electrical power to use the override - simply remove the cover, insert tool, press down, and shift to NEUTRAL. The brake pedal switch becomes irrelevant when using the mechanical override.
