⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (if battery has any remaining charge)
- Press and hold the brake pedal
- Press the shifter release button on the side of the shifter and move to Neutral
- If the shifter will not release from Park, locate the shift-lock override slot—it is typically a small rectangular or circular opening near the base of the shifter console, often covered by a small removable cap or rubber plug
- Remove the cap by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver
- Insert a key, screwdriver, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
- Remove the tool and replace the cap
Shift-lock override location
Small capped slot at the base of the center console shifter assembly, typically to the right or in front of the shifter lever; may be labeled with a small icon or 'SHIFT LOCK' text
With zero electrical power
The mechanical shift-lock override allows you to release the shifter to Neutral even with a completely dead battery. The override physically disengages the lock solenoid. No electrical power is required once you use the manual override.
