🚨 2012 Lincoln Zephyr: Emergency Neutral

The 2012 Lincoln Zephyr (rebadged MKZ) uses a traditional column-mounted gear selector with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure parking brake is firmly engaged and wheel chocks are in place
  2. Turn ignition to ON/RUN position if 12V power is available (do not start engine)
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening near the base of the column shifter stalk, typically on the left side or underneath
  5. Remove the small plastic cover over the override slot if present
  6. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot
  7. While holding the brake pedal and pushing the override, move the shifter to Neutral
  8. If no electrical power: skip to no-power procedure below
Shift-lock override location
Small slot near the base of the column shifter stalk, typically on the left side or underneath; may have a small removable cover
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery: the column shifter lock is mechanical and electronic. You may need to jump-start the 12V battery minimally (just enough for accessories) to release the shift lock solenoid. If absolutely unable to get any power, the steering column may need partial disassembly to manually release the shift lock mechanism - this is a last resort requiring professional assistance.
