The procedure
- Ensure parking brake is firmly engaged and wheel chocks are in place
- Turn ignition to ON/RUN position if 12V power is available (do not start engine)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening near the base of the column shifter stalk, typically on the left side or underneath
- Remove the small plastic cover over the override slot if present
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot
- While holding the brake pedal and pushing the override, move the shifter to Neutral
