The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and chock all wheels before attempting any procedure
- Turn the ignition to ON (or ACC) position without starting the engine - this provides power to the shift interlock system
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Move the shifter from Park to Neutral - if it moves freely, you're done
- If the shifter is locked and won't move, locate the shift-lock override slot
- The override is a small rectangular slot with a plastic cap, located on the left side of the shifter base near the console trim
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the plastic cap covering the override slot
- Insert the key, a small screwdriver, or similar tool into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously moving the shifter from Park to Neutral
- Keep the tool pressed in the override slot until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or rolled short distances, or loaded onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery and no electrical power, the shift-lock override is your only option. Follow the override procedure above. The override is mechanical and does not require any electrical power to function. You may need to use a jump box or jumper cables temporarily just to get enough power to release the steering lock if you need to steer the vehicle, but the shift-lock override itself works without power. Note that without power, you cannot turn the ignition to release the steering lock for steering during rolling.
