⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground with parking brake firmly applied and wheels chocked.
- Turn the ignition key to position I or II (accessory/on) if battery has any charge remaining.
- Locate the small shift lock override button on the right side of the steering column shroud, just below and behind the shift lever.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool into the override slot and press firmly.
- While holding the override button depressed, press the release button on the shift lever and move it to Neutral.
- If successful, release both buttons and verify the shifter is in Neutral before attempting to move the vehicle.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override should still function mechanically. If the steering lock is also engaged and cannot be released without power, you may need to apply slight rotational pressure to the steering wheel while turning the key to position I. In worst-case scenarios where the column lock cannot be released, the vehicle must be flatbedded without moving the wheels.
