🚨 2008 Mercedes-Benz C250 W204: Emergency Neutral

The W204 C-Class uses a console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift interlock and a more refined shifter design than the W203.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition key to position 1 (ACC) or position 2 (ON) if battery has any charge remaining.
  3. Locate the shift lock override - on the W204, look for a small rectangular or circular cover on the left side of the shifter assembly near the base, or sometimes integrated into the shifter trim panel.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the override cover cap.
  5. Insert the key blade or small flathead screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and simultaneously press the shifter release button, then move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  7. If resistance is felt, ensure the override is fully depressed and that you're applying forward pressure on the main shifter button.
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or winched onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Located on the left side of the shifter assembly near the base, covered by a small plastic cap - exact position may vary slightly between early and late W204 production but is always on the driver's side of the shifter.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical shift lock override will still function. No battery power is required - the override physically releases the shift lock pawl. However, you may need to ensure the steering lock is not engaged; if the key won't turn at all due to a dead battery affecting the electronic steering lock (ESL), you may need to jump-start the 12V system momentarily just to unlock the steering column, then proceed with the shift override.
