🚨 2010 Mercedes-Benz C250 W204: Emergency Neutral

The W204 C250 uses a traditional Mercedes floor-mounted automatic shifter lever with electronic shift lock located on the center console.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Engage the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition to position 1 (ACC) or 2 (ON) if battery has any charge remaining.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: a small rectangular opening covered by a plastic cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the driver's side of the shift gate.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the small plastic cover cap.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key blade straight down into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to neutral.
  7. If no power, continue holding the override down and manually move the shifter to neutral - it should release.
  8. Remove the tool and replace the plastic cap.
  9. Vehicle can now roll - maintain brake or chock control.

With zero electrical power
With zero power, the override slot still mechanically releases the shift lock mechanism. Insert tool into the override slot, press down firmly, and move shifter to neutral without needing to press the brake pedal. The steering will be locked, so the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with wheels free - it cannot be steered.
