🚨 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 CLA uses a conventional console-mounted electronic gear selector lever with P-R-N-D positions.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. Locate the shift lock override slot, typically found as a small rectangular cap on the right side of the shifter base near the console trim.
  3. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the override cap.
  4. Insert the key blade or a small flathead screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly.
  5. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if 12V power is available) and move the shifter from P to N.
  6. If no 12V power is available, continue holding the override down and apply firm rearward pressure on the shifter to manually release it to N.
  7. Once in N, release the override and verify the shifter remains in neutral position.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter may not respond normally. Use the shift lock override slot (remove cap, insert key, press down) and apply manual force to move the shifter rearward to N. The transmission will mechanically disengage from P when the override is depressed. You may need to rock the vehicle slightly to relieve pressure on the parking pawl.
