⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface with the parking brake firmly engaged and wheels chocked.
- Turn the ignition key to position 2 (ignition on) to power the vehicle electronics.
- Locate the shift lock override access—there is a small rectangular cover or slot directly to the left of the shifter base on the center console.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the mechanical key blade to carefully pry off the cover if present.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the revealed slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and moving it to Neutral.
- The override mechanically disengages the shift lock solenoid, allowing movement without brake pedal depression.
- Once in Neutral, release the override and verify the position by attempting to roll the vehicle slightly.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the electronic shifter solenoid will remain locked. You must provide at least minimal 12V power to position 2 (ignition on) using jumper cables or a portable jump starter connected to the battery or jump-start posts under the hood. Once power is restored to ignition position 2, use the manual override as described. Without any power, the shifter cannot be released and the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with the transmission locked in Park using dollies or a winch.
