🚨 2024 Mercedes-Benz E350 Diesel W213: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 W213 E-Class uses an electronic monostable center console shifter (moves and returns to center position) with a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the electric parking brake if functional.
  2. Attempt to power the vehicle by pressing the start button without pressing the brake pedal (this puts the vehicle in accessory mode if battery has minimal charge).
  3. If the shifter is non-responsive, locate the shift lock override release on the center console directly adjacent to the shifter.
  4. On the left side of the shifter base, find a small rectangular or square cover (approximately 1 inch square)—this may be labeled or flush with the trim.
  5. Carefully pry off the cover using a trim tool or flathead screwdriver wrapped in tape to avoid scratching.
  6. Insert the metal key blade or a small flathead screwdriver into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
  7. While holding the override down, attempt to move the shifter to the neutral position (push forward once from Park).
  8. If the electronic shifter completely fails to respond, the vehicle must be flatbedded—do not attempt to tow with driven wheels on the ground.
  9. For flatbed loading with zero power, the parking brake must be released manually: remove the rear seat cushion, locate the emergency brake release cable (typically a yellow pull loop or cable near the brake actuator module under the seat), and pull firmly to release the parking brake mechanically.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cover on the left side of the center console shifter base; override slot accessed with key blade or small screwdriver.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter and electric parking brake will not function. You must use the shift lock override at the console AND manually release the parking brake using the emergency release cable under the rear seat. If the shifter electronics remain completely dead, the transmission cannot be shifted electronically and the vehicle requires flatbed transport. Do NOT attempt to tow—the 9G-TRONIC transmission requires proper neutral selection to avoid damage.
