🚨 2025 Mercedes-Benz E450 W214: Emergency Neutral

The W214 E-Class uses a console-mounted electronic gear selector with shift-by-wire technology, similar in appearance to the W213 but with updated electronics.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. Locate the shift lock override access point—on W214, look for a small cover or slot near the shifter base on the right side.
  3. Remove the cover using a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade.
  4. Insert the key blade or screwdriver into the override slot and press down.
  5. While holding the override, attempt to shift to Neutral (may require residual 12V power).
  6. If the vehicle is completely dead, the electronic shifter will not function—proceed to emergency tow mode activation.
Shift-lock override location

With zero electrical power
With zero power, the electronic shifter cannot be moved conventionally. The hybrid system includes a mechanical transmission release, but this requires specialized access from underneath the vehicle. For roadside recovery, flatbed towing is mandatory. Attempting to shift without proper procedures may damage the transmission or hybrid drivetrain.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
This is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). NEVER tow with drive wheels on the ground—the electric motors and transmission can be severely damaged. Always use a flatbed. Ensure the high-voltage system is safe before any work (no exposed orange cables, no warning lights if any power available). If you must move it short distances in a shop, consult the Mercedes-Benz workshop manual for the manual transmission release procedure specific to hybrid models.
