🚨 2018 Mercedes-Benz E53 AMG: Emergency Neutral

The 2018 E53 AMG uses Mercedes-Benz's electronic column-mounted shifter stalk on the right side of the steering column.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. If you have any electrical power: turn the ignition to position 2 (ON) without starting the engine.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Move the shifter stalk down past Drive to engage Neutral, then release the stalk.
  5. If the electronic shifter will not respond due to brake-light switch failure or shift interlock: locate the shift lock override access.
  6. Remove the small circular or rectangular trim cover on the shifter stalk housing near the base of the stalk.
  7. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade into the override slot.
  8. While pressing the override and holding the brake (if possible), move the shifter stalk to Neutral.
  9. If successful, the transmission indicator should show 'N' on the instrument cluster.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the electronic shifter will not function. You cannot shift the transmission electronically. The vehicle must be flatbedded or dollied with rear wheels off the ground (RWD/AWD). Do NOT attempt to tow with any wheels on the ground without power—the transmission will not be in Neutral and severe damage will occur.
