🚨 2001 Mercedes-Benz G350d W463: Emergency Neutral

The 2001 G350d W463 typically came with a 5-speed manual transmission with a conventional floor-mounted shifter (some markets may have had automatic options).

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. If equipped with a manual transmission: Press the clutch pedal fully to the floor, move the gear lever to the neutral position (center position with side-to-side wiggle confirms neutral), and release the clutch. No power is required.
  2. If equipped with the 5-speed automatic transmission (722.6): Locate the shift lock override slot—look for a small plastic cover or cap near the base of the floor-mounted shifter console, typically on the left side or front edge.
  3. With the ignition off, pry off the small cover cap using a flat-blade screwdriver or your key.
  4. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver, key, or small tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
  5. While holding the override down, move the shift lever from P through R to N (Neutral).
  6. The shifter should move freely with the override engaged—if it doesn't, ensure you're pressing the override completely and try again.
  7. Remove the tool and the transmission will remain in Neutral even without power.
Shift-lock override location
For automatic transmission models: small covered slot near the base of the floor shifter console, typically on the left front side of the shifter base. Manual transmission models require no override—simply select neutral with clutch depressed.
With zero electrical power
Manual transmission: No electrical power is needed—press clutch and select neutral mechanically. Automatic transmission: The shift lock override is mechanical and works with zero electrical power. You do not need to turn the ignition on or have any battery power to use the override and shift to neutral.
