🚨 2007 Mercedes-Benz G350d W463: Emergency Neutral

The 2007 G350d uses a traditional column-mounted gear selector lever with Mercedes-Benz's electronic shift lock system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition key to position 1 (ACC) or 2 (ON) if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening on the left side of the column shroud near the base of the shift lever
  4. Remove the small cover cap from the override slot using a flathead screwdriver or by carefully prying with a key
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key into the override slot and press firmly downward while simultaneously moving the shift lever to Neutral
  6. If the shift lever will not move, apply the brake pedal (if functional) while holding the override down
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or towed

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. However, the steering lock will remain engaged. You must jump-start the battery or provide 12V power to at least position 1 to unlock the steering column before the vehicle can roll freely. For flatbed loading with dead battery, the front wheels may need to be on dollies due to steering lock.
