The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition key to position 1 or 2 (MAR or ignition on) to provide some electrical power to the shifter electronics if battery has any remaining charge
- Press the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small covered opening on the right side of the steering column shroud near the base of the shift lever
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small plastic cover cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shift lever to Neutral
- If the battery is completely dead and ignition cannot be turned on, you may need to jump-start the 12V battery enough to power the shift interlock mechanism, or manually release the shifter mechanism through the override
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or winched onto a flatbed
