The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to position 1 (ACC) or position 2 (ON) if battery power is available.
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular cover on the right side of the shifter base, near the console.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small plastic cover revealing the override slot.
- Insert the screwdriver or key firmly into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shifter to Neutral.
- If no brake pressure or power is available, maintain downward pressure on the override while pulling the shifter rearward to Neutral position.
- Keep pressure on the override mechanism throughout the shift movement until the transmission engages Neutral.
