The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 if battery has any charge; if completely dead, proceed to next step.
- Locate the shift-lock override slot on the center console: look for a small rectangular cap/cover near the base of the gear selector on the right side.
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the override cover cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the exposed override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the gear selector to Neutral.
- If the vehicle has absolutely no power and the electronic selector will not respond, the transmission must be placed in tow mode—consult the owner's manual for the specific multi-step procedure involving ignition cycling and brake/selector sequences, or use flatbed transport.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled; release the parking brake only when ready to move and the vehicle is secured.
