🚨 1994 Mercedes-Benz G500 W463: Emergency Neutral

The 1994 G500 W463 came with either a manual transmission (floor shifter) or a 4-speed automatic transmission with a floor-mounted traditional PRND lever.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. FOR MANUAL TRANSMISSION: Ensure parking brake is engaged, press clutch pedal fully, and move shift lever to neutral position (middle position with side-to-side wiggle) - no override needed
  2. FOR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION: Ensure parking brake is engaged and vehicle is on level ground
  3. Turn ignition key to ON position (do not start engine)
  4. Press brake pedal firmly
  5. Move shifter from Park through Reverse to Neutral
  6. If shifter will not move from Park due to failed shift lock, locate and use the shift lock override release
Shift-lock override location
FOR AUTOMATIC: Small rectangular or square access panel/cap near the base of the floor shifter, typically on the right side or front-right of the shifter console trim; pry up this cap with a small screwdriver to reveal the override slot, then insert the ignition key or small flathead screwdriver into the slot and press down while moving the shifter out of Park
With zero electrical power
FOR MANUAL: No power required - simply press clutch and shift to neutral. FOR AUTOMATIC: With completely dead battery, turn the key to ON if possible (may work even with low voltage) or jump the battery minimally to provide voltage to the shift lock solenoid. If no power available at all, use the shift lock override described above. The 1994 W463 automatic shift lock is mechanical-override accessible and does not require electrical power once the override is engaged.
