⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure parking brake is firmly engaged and vehicle is on level ground
- Turn ignition key to ON position (do not start engine)
- Press brake pedal firmly
- Move shifter from Park through Reverse to Neutral
- If shifter will not move from Park due to failed shift lock or brake light switch, locate and use the shift lock override release
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular access cover/cap located near the base of the shifter on the center console, typically on the right side or front of the shifter bezel; pry up the cap with a small flathead screwdriver to reveal the override slot, then insert the ignition key or small screwdriver into the slot and press down firmly while moving the shifter out of Park to Neutral
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, attempt to turn key to ON position (may still work with very low voltage to activate shift lock solenoid). If this fails, use the mechanical shift lock override described above by accessing the override slot under the trim cap. Once the override is pressed, the shifter can be moved to Neutral without electrical power. Note that with a dead battery, power steering and brake assist will not function when moving the vehicle.
