🚨 1998 Mercedes-Benz G500 W463: Emergency Neutral

The 1998 G500 W463 uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with a mechanical shift lock linked to the brake pedal.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is firmly applied
  2. Turn the ignition key to position II (ON) if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening on the left side of the shifter base, often covered by a removable plastic cap
  4. Remove the cap by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or similar tool
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot and push down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If the shifter remains locked, verify you are pushing the override mechanism fully down—it may require significant pressure
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical override still functions. The key does not need to be in any particular position. Use a flashlight to locate the override slot. The override physically releases the shift lock pawl, allowing the shifter to move without brake pedal input or electrical power.
