🚨 2009 Mercedes-Benz G550 W463: Emergency Neutral

The 2009 G550 W463 uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with an electronically-controlled shift lock system linked to the brake pedal and ignition position.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is firmly applied
  2. Turn the ignition key to position II (ON) if battery has any charge remaining—this may allow normal shifting with the brake pedal
  3. If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override access—look for a small rectangular or circular slot near the shifter base, typically on the left side or front, possibly covered by a removable cap
  4. Remove the cap by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot and push down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If resistance is felt, ensure you are applying firm downward pressure on the override—the mechanism may require significant force
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed
Shift-lock override location
Small access slot near the shifter base, typically on the left side or front of the shifter surround, often covered by a removable plastic cap
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical override is the only method to release the shifter. The key may need to be inserted but does not need battery power to turn. Use a flashlight to locate the override access. The override physically releases the shift lock solenoid or pawl. If no override slot is visible around the shifter base, check the owner's manual or look for access by removing the shifter trim bezel.
