⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake fully
- Turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 (ACC or ON) if battery has any remaining charge
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is beneath a small rectangular cover cap on the console directly in front of the shifter base
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the cover cap
- Insert the key blade or small screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal if power is available, then move the shifter to neutral
- If completely without power, hold the override down and move the shifter to N with moderate force
- The shifter should release; you may feel a mechanical click as the lock disengages

With zero electrical power
The W220 uses electronic shift-by-wire, but the shift lock override is mechanical and will function without 12V power. However, be aware that the transmission selector mechanism itself requires some electrical function to properly engage neutral. If completely dead, the mechanical override releases the shifter lock, but the transmission may not respond to gear selection. In this case, the vehicle must be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground—do not attempt to tow with wheels down.
