🚨 2020 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG: Emergency Neutral

The 2020 S63 AMG uses Mercedes' electronic column-mounted shifter stalk on the right side of the steering column.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. Turn the ignition to position II (ON) if 12V power is available—this may allow normal shifter operation even with a failed brake switch.
  3. If the electronic shifter stalk will not move to N, locate the shift-lock override slot: it is under a small rectangular cap on the center console to the right of the shift stalk base (or below it, depending on console design).
  4. Pry off the override cap carefully with a flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool.
  5. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while moving the shifter stalk to N.
  6. If there is no 12V power at all, see the no-power procedure below—the electronic shifter requires some voltage to release.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cap on the center console near the base of the column shifter stalk, typically to the right or just below the stalk mount—exact position varies by console trim.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter stalk will not release. You must jump-start the 12V battery (under the rear seat or in the trunk) to at least 9V to energize the shifter module. Once power is restored, use the override slot if the brake switch has failed. If the battery cannot be jumped, the transmission will remain locked in Park and the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with the rear wheels lifted or on dollies.
