🚨 2010 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG: Emergency Neutral

The R230 SL55 AMG uses a traditional column-mounted automatic transmission selector lever with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Engage the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to position 1 (ACC) or position 2 (ON) if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap located on the right side of the steering column shroud near the base of the shifter stalk
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the cover cap
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you to move it to Neutral
  6. Keep the override depressed until the shifter is fully in the N position

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. However, you will NOT be able to turn the steering wheel (steering lock remains engaged). You may need to jump-start the vehicle minimally to release the steering lock before the car can be safely moved or loaded. The override only releases the shifter, not the steering.
