🚨 2003 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG: Emergency Neutral

The 2003 SL65 AMG (R230 chassis) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with a traditional PRND gate and electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake manually if needed.
  2. If battery has any charge, turn the key to position 2 (ignition ON, engine off) and press the brake pedal while moving shifter to Neutral—this is the normal method.
  3. If the shifter will not release from Park, locate the shift lock override access on the center console near the shifter base.
  4. On the R230 SL-Class, look for a small covered slot or cap directly to the right side of the shifter base, sometimes labeled with a key symbol.
  5. Remove the cap by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or using the mechanical key blade.
  6. Insert the key or a small screwdriver into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and moving it to Neutral.
  7. The mechanical override disengages the shift lock solenoid, allowing manual movement of the shifter.
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can roll freely—use wheel chocks and ensure parking brake is released for towing.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock solenoid remains engaged and locks the shifter in Park. You must use the mechanical shift lock override as described. If the override mechanism is broken or inaccessible, you cannot shift out of Park without power. Provide temporary 12V power by jump-starting or connecting a battery directly to the vehicle's jump-start terminals under the hood to energize the shifter system, then shift to Neutral. For towing with locked transmission, flatbed is mandatory.
