🚨 1996 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter T1N: Emergency Neutral

The 1996 T1N Sprinter uses a column-mounted shift lever with mechanical shift-lock on automatic transmission models.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Locate the shift-lock override access, typically a small slot or button near the base of the shifter on the column shroud.
  3. Remove any cover or trim piece concealing the override mechanism.
  4. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press or push in the direction that releases the lock.
  5. While holding the override mechanism, move the shift lever from Park to Neutral.
  6. Verify the shifter remains in Neutral before attempting to move the vehicle.
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the column shifter, accessed through the steering column shroud area; exact location may require inspection of the specific vehicle
With zero electrical power
Early T1N Sprinters may have simpler mechanical shift-lock systems that are less dependent on electrical power. The mechanical override should function with no power. The steering wheel will remain locked, requiring flatbed towing or front-axle-lift towing only.
