🚨 2012 Mitsubishi Pajero Mini: Emergency Neutral

The 2012 Pajero Mini uses a conventional console-mounted automatic shifter with a button-release mechanism on the handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if you have any battery power
  2. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot, typically covered by a small rectangular cap on the console near the shifter base
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or the metal key to pry off the small cap covering the override slot
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key straight down into the override slot while maintaining brake pressure
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If you have zero power, you may need to manually push the override mechanism—keep the key in ACC position mechanically even without battery power to unlock the steering
Shift-lock override location
Console-mounted near the shifter base, usually on the right side or front of the shifter surround, under a small removable cap
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, turn the key to ACC position mechanically (this doesn't require power). The shift lock override will still function mechanically when pressed. You may need to rock the vehicle slightly while manipulating the override if the parking pawl is under load.
