🚨 2011 Nissan Elgrand: Emergency Neutral

The 2011 Nissan Elgrand (E52 generation, 2010-2024) uses a console-mounted automatic shifter with electronic shift-lock and push-button start.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly
  2. Press the push-button start twice without pressing the brake pedal to reach ACC or ON mode (if battery has charge)
  3. Locate the shift-lock override cover: it is a small rectangular cap on the console near the shifter base, typically on the left side of the shifter
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail to pry off the small override cover cap
  5. Insert a screwdriver or key into the exposed override slot
  6. Press down firmly on the tool while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral
  7. Keep the tool depressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral, then remove the tool and replace the cap

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the push-button start will not function but the mechanical shift-lock override will still work. Use the override slot with a screwdriver as described. The override is purely mechanical and does not require electrical power. Work in adequate light or use a flashlight to locate the small override slot.
