🚨 2022 Nissan Serena: Emergency Neutral

The 2022 Serena (C27 generation, Japanese/international market) uses a console-mounted electronic shift lever with e-Power hybrid system integration.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure parking brake is engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Attempt to turn ignition to ON/ACC mode if any 12V power remains - this may allow normal shifting to neutral
  3. If completely dead, locate the shift lock override - on the C27 Serena it is typically a small capped slot on the console near the shifter base
  4. Remove the small cap or cover (usually on the right side or forward of the shifter)
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down
  6. While holding override, attempt to move shifter to neutral position
  7. For e-Power models, the transmission may have additional electronic locks - if override does not work, vehicle MUST be flatbedded
  8. DO NOT attempt to tow with any wheels on the ground - e-Power system can be damaged
Shift-lock override location
Small capped slot near the shifter base on the center console, typically on the right side or just forward of the shifter boot
With zero electrical power
The e-Power hybrid system is heavily electronic. With zero 12V power, the shift lock override may be ineffective due to electronic transmission locks. If override does not successfully engage neutral, the vehicle must be flatbedded with all wheels off the ground. Do not force the shifter.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Serena e-Power is a series hybrid with the electric motor directly driving the wheels. NEVER tow this vehicle with drive wheels on the ground, even in neutral, as it will cause severe damage to the electric drive system. Always use a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground. The 12V battery powers control systems but the high-voltage system remains potentially active.
