🚨 2025 Nissan Serena: Emergency Neutral

The 2025 Nissan Serena hybrid uses a console-mounted electronic shifter lever with a shift-lock interlock that requires brake application and 12V power.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition to ON (press START button twice without brake pedal) to provide 12V power to the shifter mechanism
  3. Locate the shift-lock override slot: look for a small rubber cap or rectangular cover near the base of the shifter on the left or front side
  4. Pry off the cap carefully with a flathead screwdriver or trim tool
  5. Insert a key, small screwdriver, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal and move the shifter to N (Neutral)
  7. If you successfully shifted to N, the vehicle can now roll; maintain parking brake until ready
Shift-lock override location
Small cap near the base of the shifter console, typically on the left or front side of the shifter base—check owner's manual for exact position
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter will not function even with the override. You must either jump-start the 12V battery to get enough power to shift to N, or load the vehicle onto a flatbed with dollies under the front wheels. Do NOT attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The Serena e-POWER is a series hybrid (engine generates electricity, motor drives wheels). If the 12V battery is dead, the high-voltage system is irrelevant—you need 12V power to unlock the shifter. Never flat-tow this vehicle; the electric motor can be damaged. Use flatbed transport only, or dolly the front wheels if towing from rear.
