🚨 2017 Nissan X-Trail MX: Emergency Neutral

The 2017 X-Trail (T32 generation) uses a conventional floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly applied
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (if battery has any charge)
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the console trim
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the small cap covering the override slot
  5. Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and push down firmly while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shifter to Neutral
  6. If no electrical power is available, continue holding the override down and use force to move the shifter—it should release mechanically
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
With zero battery power, the shift lock override is mechanical—insert the tool into the override slot and hold it down while applying firm pressure to move the shifter to Neutral. The ignition does not need to be on for the mechanical override to function.
