The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly applied
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (if battery has any charge)
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the console trim
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the small cap covering the override slot
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and push down firmly while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If no electrical power is available, continue holding the override down and use force to move the shifter—it should release mechanically
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed

With zero battery power, the shift lock override is mechanical—insert the tool into the override slot and hold it down while applying firm pressure to move the shifter to Neutral. The ignition does not need to be on for the mechanical override to function.
