🚨 2020 Nissan X-Trail MX: Emergency Neutral

The 2020 X-Trail uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake fully
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - there is a small rectangular cover cap near the base of the shifter on the left side
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover cap
  5. Insert the screwdriver or a key into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If no brake pedal response, continue holding the override down and firmly pull the shifter toward Neutral position

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: use the shift lock override slot method (steps 3-7). The mechanical override will release the shifter without any electrical power. You may need to apply more force to move the shifter without brake input.
