🚨 2025 Polestar 2: Emergency Neutral

The 2025 Polestar 2 uses a small monostable (self-returning) center console gear selector with Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive positions.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the 12V battery has some charge - the electronic shifter requires power to operate; if completely dead, jump-start the 12V battery first.
  2. Press the brake pedal and press the Start button to power on the vehicle (or at least enable accessory mode).
  3. With the brake pedal depressed, move the gear selector rearward briefly to Neutral (the shifter will spring back to center but the transmission will remain in Neutral).
  4. Verify Neutral is engaged by checking the instrument cluster display showing 'N'.
  5. If the vehicle will not shift due to a brake switch failure, look for a manual shift lock override - consult the owner's manual as location may vary by model year, though the Polestar 2 may not have a traditional mechanical override.
  6. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or winched onto a flatbed.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter will not function. You must jump-start the 12V battery (located under the hood) to provide power to the shifter system. Even with the high-voltage battery depleted, the 12V system must be operational to shift. If the 12V battery cannot be revived, the vehicle must be dragged onto a flatbed with wheels skidding or lifted - do NOT tow with wheels on the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Polestar 2 is a pure EV with a single-speed transmission. NEVER flat-tow this vehicle with any wheels on the ground, even in Neutral, as the motor is mechanically connected to the wheels and will generate dangerous voltage. Always use a flatbed or trailer, or lift the drive wheels completely off the ground. For longer towing distances, flatbed transport is mandatory to avoid damaging the drive system.
