🚨 2005 Porsche 718 Boxster S: Emergency Neutral
This generation does not exist as a 718 Boxster S—the 718 designation began in 2017; 2005-2012 were 987-generation Boxster S models with traditional naming, featuring a center console-mounted automatic shifter gate or manual transmission.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Verify this is actually a 987 Boxster S (2005-2008 first-gen 987), not a 718 model
- For Tiptronic S automatic: Apply parking brake firmly and chock wheels
- Insert key and turn to position 1 or 2 (ignition on, engine does not need to start)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the shift lock release button on the left side of the shifter gate while pulling the shifter back toward N
- For manual transmission: the shifter moves freely with clutch pedal depressed; with no power, shift can be moved without clutch pedal
- If battery is completely dead and Tiptronic will not release: look for a manual shift lock override—consult owner's manual for specific override procedure as location varies by production date
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the Tiptronic shift lock may remain engaged. The 987 generation typically requires at least ignition position 1 to release the shifter. Jump-starting the 12V battery or connecting a jump box to release the shifter is the most reliable method. Manual transmission cars can be shifted without power.
