⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply wheel chocks.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (this may provide power to release the shift lock).
- Press and hold the brake pedal, then attempt to move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override release—look for a small rectangular or circular cap near the shifter base on the console.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the vehicle key to pry off the override cover.
- Insert a screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from P to N.
- Release the parking brake if it is mechanical, or ensure it's off if electronic.
- Vehicle should now roll freely for loading.

With zero electrical power
With no battery power, turn the key to ACC position mechanically if the steering lock allows. The shift lock override is mechanical and will work without electrical power. If the parking brake is electronic and engaged, it may remain locked without power—in this case, flatbed transport with the parking brake engaged is necessary, or the rear wheels must be lifted.
